Recreate this chrome look at home

  1. Prep: push back cuticles, buff the shine off the nail plate and wipe with alcohol so the base coat grips.
  2. Shape: File the sides in a straight line toward the center and round the tip softly, like the top of an almond.
  3. Apply a thin gel base coat and cure it.
  4. Paint two thin coats of burnt orange gel color, curing each one.
  5. Add a no-wipe gel top coat and cure it for only half the usual time so it stays slightly tacky.
  6. Rub chrome powder in with a silicone tool or eyeshadow sponge until it looks like liquid metal.
  7. Brush off the loose powder, cap the free edge and seal with a second no-wipe top coat.
  8. Finish with cuticle oil once everything is dry.

Pro tip: Chrome shows every bump, so a smooth base (or a builder gel layer) matters more than the color.

Burnt orange chrome nails: FAQ

Can you do chrome nails with regular polish?

Chrome powder needs a gel no-wipe top coat to stick. With regular polish you can get a similar shine from metallic "chrome-effect" lacquers, but the mirror finish only comes from powder over gel.

Why is my chrome powder not shiny?

Usually the top coat was fully cured (too hard) or not a no-wipe formula. Under-cure it slightly, then burnish the powder with firm pressure.

Are almond nails strong?

They are stronger than stiletto because the tip is rounded, but the narrow tip is more fragile than square. Medium length with gel or builder gel is the sweet spot.

Does burnt orange nail polish suit my skin tone?

Burnt orange and copper shine on warm and deep skin; peach and coral lift fair and neutral skin.
