It always happens right before an event: a snag, a crack, and suddenly your favorite nail is hanging on by a thread. Before you clip everything short, try one of these fixes. They hold the nail together until the break grows out.

First, check the damage. If the crack reaches the nail bed, bleeds or hurts, skip the DIY repair. Keep it clean and covered and let it heal.

What you’ll need

  • Nail glue (or brush-on resin)
  • A patch material: a tea bag, silk wrap or fiberglass
  • A fine nail file and buffer
  • Clear base and top coat

Method 1: The tea bag trick (cheapest)

  1. Remove any polish and gently buff the surface around the crack.
  2. Cut a small piece of an empty tea bag slightly larger than the crack.
  3. Brush a thin layer of nail glue over the crack, then lay the tea bag piece on top.
  4. Add another thin layer of glue to saturate the patch. Let it dry.
  5. Buff the patch smooth so the edges disappear, then paint as usual.

It sounds strange, but tea bag paper is thin and strong — the same idea as professional silk wraps.

Method 2: Silk wrap (most natural)

Silk wraps are the salon version of the tea bag trick: thinner, stronger and almost invisible. Apply exactly the same way — glue, silk, glue, buff. A small kit lasts for dozens of repairs.

Method 3: Nail glue only (tiny splits)

For a hairline crack at the tip, a drop of glue and a smooth file may be enough. Glue alone is not strong enough for a deeper crack, though. It will re-open within a day or two.

Method 4: Gel or builder gel overlay (strongest)

If you do gel manicures, patch the crack with silk, then cover the whole nail with a thin layer of builder gel. It’s the strongest option and lasts until your next fill. Our builder gel guide covers the full technique.

A sheer overlay like these hides a repaired nail completely.

When to trim instead

  • The break is diagonal and deep on one side.
  • More than half the free edge is torn.
  • You just want to reset: trim all nails a little shorter so they match. Short squoval nails are the most break-resistant nail shape.

How to prevent broken nails

  1. File in one direction with a glass file to seal the edge.
  2. Oil every night. Flexible nails bend instead of snapping.
  3. Use a strengthener as a base coat if your nails are thin.
  4. Wear gloves for cleaning and dishes.

Nails that keep breaking usually need a better routine, not a better glue. Our guide to grow strong nails covers the habits that make the biggest difference. Need a quick cover-up while the break grows out? Press-on nails hide repairs in minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Can a broken nail heal?

The nail plate itself cannot heal, but you can hold the crack together with a patch (tea bag, silk or fiberglass) until the damaged part grows out past the fingertip and can be trimmed off.

Can I use super glue on a broken nail?

Nail glue is designed for nails and is the safer choice. Household super glue is similar but can irritate skin, so if you use it, keep it off the skin and cuticles.

What should I do if my nail breaks below the fingertip?

If the break reaches the pink nail bed, is bleeding or painful, clean it, cover it with a bandage and avoid patching it with glue. See a doctor if it looks infected.
