Gel polish

Painted on like polish, cured under a lamp. It’s thin, flexible and glossy, and very doable at home with a gel kit. The trade-off: you need a lamp, and removal needs acetone.

Builder gel (BIAB)

A thicker gel that adds structure, so thin or bendy nails stop breaking. Many people use it to grow out their natural nails. It’s slightly trickier to apply evenly at home.

Typical builder gel looks: sheer milky and pink.

Dip powder

Nails are coated with a bonding liquid and dipped into colored powder. It’s very hard-wearing and needs no lamp — but it’s thick, and the shared dip jar at salons can be a hygiene concern.

Acrylic

A liquid monomer and powder that form a hard layer, sculpted to any length. Unbeatable for long, dramatic shapes, but it has a strong smell, needs regular fills, and poor removal is the most common cause of nail damage.

Polygel is a popular middle ground: it adds length like acrylic but is shaped like putty and cured like gel, with far less odor.

Long almond sets like these usually need acrylic, builder gel or press-ons.

Press-on nails

The fastest, cheapest and most commitment-free option. Modern press-ons look surprisingly real — and with the right technique they last up to two weeks.

So which should you choose?

  • Want glossy, chip-free natural nails? Gel polish.
  • Nails always breaking? Builder gel, plus a nail care routine.
  • Need length for a weekend? Press-ons.
  • Want long nails all the time? Acrylic or polygel — but budget for fills.

Whatever you pick, the rule is the same: never peel or pry it off. Proper removal is what keeps your natural nails healthy.

Frequently asked questions

Which is less damaging, gel or acrylic?

Gel polish is generally less damaging than acrylic because it is thinner and soaks off more easily. The biggest cause of damage for both is improper removal.

Which lasts longer, gel or dip powder?

Dip powder usually lasts slightly longer (3–4 weeks) than gel polish (2–3 weeks), but it is thicker and takes longer to remove.

What is the cheapest long-lasting manicure?

An at-home gel kit is the cheapest long-lasting option over time. Press-on nails are the cheapest option for a single occasion.
